Pirates Modern Day Caribbean

Pirates, cannons, and fire?

Now I’ll start this off by saying I realize I’m taking my ‘facts’ here from movies and the occasional documentary, but I see it so often I’m wondering if there’s truth behind it.

I’ve often wondered why movies depict cannons as explosive. In the first Pirate of the Caribbean movie the ship that’s destroyed is burning. In other movies you’ll see a cannonball hit and it explodes as if it were a modern day missle. Is there something I’m missing? I always thought a cannonball was simply a chunk of metal that punches holes in things, but everything I’ve seen contradicts that.

Would love to hear from some history buffs on the reasoning behind this and the actual damage of a cannon.

Thanks in advance!

There were several types of cannon ammunition during that time period. Shot was solid iron balls used to smash into wooden hulls and masts. Chain shot (two cannon balls chained together) and separating shot (cannonballs that split apart, though still connected by internal chains or bars) were used to rip through sails and rigging. Another type was shell, a hollowed out cannon ball filled with explosives and fitted with a fuse; shell was the exploding type of cannon ammunition.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” is not very historically accurate; however, contrary to popular belief, explosive shells were used by armies and navies in the 18th century. Notice the “bombs bursting in air” in Francis Scott Key’s “Star Spangled Banner”.
